The State Revenue Commissioner, Randall Hoffbeck, is coming to the Southern Peninsula to discuss potential solutions to a drastic fall in state revenues caused by low oil prices.

Kachemak Emergency Services responded to a house fire Saturday, August 29th and Fire Chief Bob Cicciarella says pictures taken by a member of the public are contributing to the investigation. A State Epidemiology report released in July shows between 2008 and 2013 the number of deaths related to heroin abuse more than tripled. Nationwide prescription opioid pain relievers are killing twice as many people as heroin. A Southern Peninsula doctor is advocating an antidote for opioid overdose that she says will save lives if used correctly. KBBI’s Quinton Chandler has more.

President Obama took time to visit Kenai Fjords National Park during his three day journey through Alaska. The president’s reasons for visiting the park were not completely clear, but it is possible the side trip is related to the broader focus of his Alaska sojourn, climate change. KBBI’s Quinton Chandler spoke with National Parks Service Spokesperson Kris Fister about the presidential visit.

For the first time the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree will come from Alaska. Chugach National Forest is providing the 2015 Christmas tree and communities across the state are making ornaments to decorate it. On Friday Homer Council on the Arts held an Open Studio for Homer residents to make ornaments that will travel from the End of the Road to D.C. KBBI’s Quinton Chandler has more.
